As 2026 Council Polls Approach, Good Governance Coalition Urges Voters to Prioritize Human-Centered Leadership

With the 2026 chairmanship and councillorship elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) fast approaching, civic actors are calling on residents to elect leaders based on merit, character, and a genuine commitment to public service.

The National Coordinator of the National Coalition for Good Governance (NCGG), Mr. Ibrahim Babangida Lawal, made the call in a statement issued in Gwagwalada Area Council on Saturday. He emphasized the need for voters to prioritize candidates who demonstrate compassion, integrity, and vision for community development.

“As a people, we must demand more from those who seek to lead us. Leadership must have a human face—one that cares about the most vulnerable, demonstrates moral courage, and advances policies that improve lives,” Lawal said.

He urged residents to carefully assess the leadership qualities of aspiring candidates rather than focusing solely on party affiliation or populist appeals.

“Do they genuinely care about citizens’ welfare? Are they accountable and transparent? Do they have a clear and actionable vision for our development?” he asked, adding that these questions should guide voters’ choices at the polls.

Lawal stressed that the election presents an opportunity for citizens to influence the trajectory of governance in the FCT by voting for credible and capable candidates.

“The FCT stands at a critical juncture. The future of our local communities depends on the choices we make now. We can’t afford to return to the politics of favoritism and mediocrity,” he said.

The NCGG also encouraged wider civic engagement ahead of the elections, calling on residents to take an active role in scrutinizing candidates’ backgrounds, policy proposals, and past performance.

“Our democracy depends on the informed participation of the people. We urge every resident to reflect on what kind of leadership we need to drive inclusive development across the FCT,” Lawal added.

The FCT Area Council elections, held every three years, determine leadership in the six area councils: Abaji, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali, and Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to release the official timetable in the coming weeks.
