It requires intentional efforts to bridge divides, celebrate diversity, and create common ground.

Dr. Memunatu Pratt, former Sierra Leonean Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, has passionately called for the prioritization of cultural diplomacy in Africa’s peacebuilding strategies. Speaking at the prestigious 2025 Pan-African Leadership Symposium and Awards (PALESH) in Lagos, Dr. Pratt emphasized the vital role of tourism, education, and cultural exchange in fostering unity and addressing conflicts across the continent.

In her address, Dr. Pratt underscored that sustainable peace is not simply the absence of war, but rather the presence of justice, equity, and shared values. “Peace cannot be achieved in a vacuum,” she stated. “It requires intentional efforts to bridge divides, celebrate diversity, and create common ground.”

Her compelling advocacy for cultural diplomacy in peacebuilding earned her the esteemed Commander of Peace Award at the event, which brought together key African leaders to discuss the pressing issues of stability, good governance, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods across the continent.

PALESH 2025 served as a platform for leaders to engage in meaningful dialogue, focusing on practical solutions for promoting unity and cooperation among African nations. The event spotlighted the transformative power of culture and education in building resilient, peaceful societies.

Dr. Pratt’s remarks resonated with many, reinforcing the notion that true peace goes beyond political agreements—it encompasses cultural understanding and cooperation. As the symposium concluded, the call for integrating cultural diplomacy into Africa’s peacebuilding framework gained significant momentum.

The 2025 PALESH event reaffirmed the commitment to addressing Africa’s challenges through innovative leadership and collaborative efforts for a peaceful, united future.
