With just under a year remaining, preparations are intensifying for the next global men’s football showcase — set to take place across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. This upcoming edition marks a transformative moment in the event’s history, expanding to 48 participating countries for the first time.
The host trio, by virtue of their position, were the earliest to gain automatic entries into the competition. As other teams continue their continental campaigns, several nations have already earned their place in the tournament.
Two Central Asian countries, Uzbekistan and Jordan, have made history by clinching qualification through the Asian zone. Regular heavyweights like Japan, Iran, and South Korea have also secured their berths.
In South America, reigning titleholders Argentina became the first from their region to confirm attendance after a commanding display in qualifiers, including a standout result over long-time adversaries.
New Zealand returns to the global stage for the first time since 2010, having emerged victorious in the Oceania regional play-off.
As of now, other continental zones — including Africa, Europe, and the remainder of North and Central America — are still engaged in the race for qualification.
Participation Breakdown and Continental Slots
The revised framework allows for 45 countries to secure their spots through regional events, with the three host nations joining automatically. Two additional places will be contested through an inter-zone playoff mechanism.

Inter-Zone Playoff Explained
Six teams from different regions will compete for the final two spots. Based on global rankings, the two highest-ranked sides advance directly to a final match. The remaining four lower-ranked sides play in preliminary fixtures, with the winners of those facing the top two in a final showdown. Victors of these matches will complete the 48-nation roster.
With qualifiers set to continue into early 2026, fans worldwide are closely following as the largest edition of the tournament in history takes shape.
