Former Super Eagles winger, Allen Okwuchukwu Waobikeze, widely admired for his dazzling left-foot and skillful play, has passed away.

Waobikeze, nicknamed ‘Babaoo’ by fans and teammates, died peacefully over the weekend, days after Nigeria mourned the loss of ex-Super Eagles captain and goalkeeper, Peter Rufai.

Although he had limited appearances for the national team due to stiff competition in the squad, Waobikeze made his mark on Nigeria’s domestic football scene. He played for top clubs including Sharks FC of Port Harcourt, BCC Lions of Gboko, and Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland FC).

His death was announced on Monday by his brother, Eli Waobikeze, via a Facebook post.

“On behalf of the Waobikeze family, I would like to announce the peaceful passing to eternal glory of my brother Allen Okwuchukwu Waobikeze. He transitioned at about 7:34 pm CST,” the statement read.

The family expressed gratitude to friends and supporters who offered prayers and support. Funeral arrangements, Eli said, will be communicated in due course.

Waobikeze’s legacy lives on through his contributions to Nigerian football, especially during the golden era of the country’s domestic league.
