The Fulani community in Nigeria has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the continued detention of Alhaji (Dr.) Abdullahi Bodejo Bello, the President of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, who has been in custody since December 9, 2024.
In an open letter signed by Amb. Mohammed Tasiu Suleiman, the National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore Fulani Sociocultural Association, the community expressed deep concern over the arrest and prolonged detention of their leader. They lamented that despite a court ruling on December 30, 2024, declaring his detention illegal and unconstitutional, he was rearrested the following day and remains in custody.
According to the letter, Alhaji Bodejo was initially arrested by the Nigerian Army, then transferred to the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) and subsequently to the State Security Service (SSS). The Fulani community maintains that no formal charges have been proven against him, alleging that he was unlawfully detained by powerful individuals in government.
The letter also raised health concerns, stating that Alhaji Bodejo requires urgent medical attention for a pre-existing condition. The community pleaded with President Tinubu to use his executive powers to secure his immediate and unconditional release.
The Fulani leaders questioned the value of their support for the APC in the 2023 elections, expressing disappointment that a prominent supporter like Alhaji Bodejo, who mobilized the Fulani people for Tinubu’s presidency, is now being treated unfairly.
The letter also referenced an incident involving individuals accused of injuring a retired General and his cattle, numbering over 500, questioning why their leader, who they describe as a law-abiding citizen, peace advocate, philanthropist, and APC loyalist, is facing prolonged detention.
The community emphasized their confidence in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and expressed hope that the newly established Ministry of Livestock Development would bring positive change for pastoral communities. However, they urged the President to act swiftly to ensure justice for Alhaji Bodejo and prevent further alienation of the Fulani people.
The case has sparked debate on issues of justice, human rights, and the rule of law, particularly as the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, presided over by Hon. Justice Mohammed Zubairu, had ordered his release, yet the order was disregarded.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with security challenges, ethnic tensions, and calls for judicial independence, the Fulani community’s plea adds to the growing concerns about the rule of law and fairness in governance. All eyes are now on President Tinubu to see if he will heed the call and intervene in the matter.
