The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is mourning the sudden death of its Cross River State Commander, Chief Narcotics Officer Ogbonna Uzoma, who was found lifeless in his hotel room in Calabar on Thursday.

According to a statement by the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, Uzoma, who assumed office on August 18, 2025, failed to show up for scheduled engagements. Concerned officers later discovered his body after hotel staff gained access through the ceiling.

“The Police Command in the state was promptly informed, after which the Commissioner of Police personally visited the scene, while investigation continues into the cause of death,” Babafemi said.

NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd.), directed the Zonal Commander, Zone 14, ACGN Mathew Ewah, to relocate to Calabar to support the inquiry. He also commiserated with the bereaved family, praying for comfort and strength.

Uzoma had been active in his short time as commander, leading officers in operational planning in a state considered a focal point for the agency’s anti-drug efforts.
