The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned of thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall across several parts of the country between Monday, September 1 and Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
In its Weather Outlook issued by the Central Forecast Office on Sunday, August 31, NiMet advised residents, farmers, motorists, and airline operators to take precautionary measures to avoid the impact of the expected weather conditions.
Monday, September 1
Northern Region: Thunderstorms with moderate rains in Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Gombe, Borno and Yobe in the morning; spreading to Bauchi, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Adamawa, Taraba, and Borno in the afternoon/evening.
Central Region: Light rains in Plateau and Niger in the morning; thunderstorms with moderate rains later in Nasarawa, Benue, Niger, Plateau, Kogi and the FCT.
Southern Region: Cloudy skies with light rains in Cross River and Akwa Ibom in the morning; light rains later in Abia, Edo, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa.
Tuesday, September 2
Northern Region: Thunderstorms and moderate rains in Bauchi, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Zamfara, Borno, Yobe, and Kebbi in the morning; extending to Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, and Zamfara later in the day.
Central Region: Cloudy morning skies with rains in Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Kwara and the FCT; thunderstorms with moderate rains across most of the region later.
Southern Region: Cloudy skies with light rains in Cross River and Akwa Ibom in the morning; moderate rains later in Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, Abia, Imo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.
Wednesday, September 3
Northern Region: Cloudy skies with sunshine intervals and rains in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi and Kano in the morning; widespread thunderstorms and moderate rains later in the day.
Central Region: Cloudy morning skies with light rains in Niger, Kwara and the FCT; thunderstorms and light rains later in the FCT, Plateau, Kogi, Benue, Niger and Nasarawa.
Southern Region: Moderate rains are expected over most parts throughout the day.
NiMet advised motorists to avoid driving in heavy rain, farmers to delay applying fertilizer and pesticides before rainfall, and residents to stay away from tall trees and fasten loose objects. It also warned against night travel and urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather updates for safe planning.
The agency further encouraged citizens to stay informed through regular weather updates available on its website, www.nimet.gov.ng.
