Heavy rains swept across most parts of the country on Tuesday morning, September 16, with The North Journals reporting heavy downpours in Adamawa and Lagos. The widespread rainfall comes as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued a three-day weather outlook warning of thunderstorms, moderate rains, and possible flash floods between September 15 and 17, 2025.
NiMet said the northern region will see isolated thunderstorms over Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, and Adamawa in the morning, spreading later to Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, Zamfara, and Kebbi. In the central states, including Kogi, Niger, Kwara, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory, morning showers will give way to thunderstorms in the afternoon. Southern states such as Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Delta are also forecast to record rains through the day.
The agency cautioned that flash floods remain likely in Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe, and urged Nigerians to take precautions.
NiMet advised motorists to avoid driving during heavy rains, while farmers should refrain from applying fertilizer or pesticides immediately before rainfall. Residents were also warned to secure loose objects, disconnect appliances, and stay clear of tall trees during storms. Airline operators were urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports for safe operations.
