In a dramatic turn of events within Nigeria’s Senate, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment, sparking a nationwide discourse marked by a spectrum of reactions and predictions.

During a heated plenary session on February 20, 2025, tensions escalated when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan protested a sudden change in her seating arrangement without prior notice. The situation intensified as she accused Senate President Akpabio of partiality and, subsequently, of sexual harassment. These serious allegations have polarized public opinion and elicited varied responses from different sectors.

Murtala Yakubu Ajaka, the Social Democratic Party’s candidate in the recent Kogi governorship election, condemned Akpabio’s actions, describing them as “legislative autocracy and rascality.” Ajaka emphasized the importance of democratic values such as inclusion and tolerance within the legislative arm and called for Akpabio’s removal, stating that his behavior undermines the Senate’s independence and credibility.

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, also criticized Akpabio’s conduct, highlighting a pattern of humiliating female senators, including Akpoti-Uduaghan and Ireti Kingibe. Ezekwesili underscored the negative impact of such behavior on women’s representation in public leadership and warned Akpabio of potential consequences if such actions persist.

Conversely, several groups have denounced Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions. The Africa Arise for Change Network (AACN), a pan-African women’s advocacy group, criticized her behavior during the plenary session, describing it as “disgraceful” and “unbefitting of a public officeholder.” The organization called for her suspension, asserting that her conduct undermines the principles of leadership and decorum expected of women in governance.

Similarly, stakeholders from the Niger Delta region, under the aegis of Niger Delta Mothers for Good Governance, condemned Akpoti-Uduaghan’s outburst, labeling it “unwomanly” and a disgrace to her constituents. They dismissed her allegations as “frivolous” and accused her of disrespect and uncontrolled pride.

The unfolding drama has led to widespread speculation about the potential outcomes. Some political analysts predict that the Senate may initiate an internal investigation to address the allegations, which could result in disciplinary actions against either party, depending on the findings. Others foresee a possible reconciliation facilitated by senior political figures to preserve the Senate’s integrity and public image.

Public opinion remains divided, with discussions on social media and public forums reflecting a nation grappling with issues of gender dynamics, power structures, and the ethical responsibilities of public officials.

The allegations brought forth by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio have ignited a complex debate that transcends the immediate individuals involved, touching upon broader themes of gender relations, political decorum, and accountability within Nigeria’s legislative framework. As the situation develops, the nation watches closely, anticipating actions that will not only address the specific allegations but also set precedents for handling similar issues in the future.
