Two senators from Rivers State elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, citing deepening internal crises within their former party and the need to align with the federal government to better serve their constituents.

The defections were formally announced on the Senate floor on Tuesday, with a high-powered APC delegation present. Alwell Onyesoh, representing Rivers East Senatorial District, said his decision followed consultations with leaders and stakeholders in the district. He emphasized that his loyalty remained with his constituents, not any political party, and highlighted the importance of aligning with structures capable of delivering good governance.

Barinada Mpigi, representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District, cited constitutional grounds for his defection, pointing to irreconcilable divisions within the PDP at all levels. He argued that the party’s internal crises made continued membership untenable.

Both lawmakers thanked the PDP for providing a platform for their political careers but said unresolved internal challenges left them no choice. APC leaders welcomed the defectors, describing the move as a boost to the party’s influence in the South-South ahead of the 2027 elections.

With the defections, APC strengthens its Senate numbers, while the PDP continues to face internal divisions and a shrinking presence in the Red Chamber.
