Ukraine on Wednesday gained enhanced partnership status in the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), a UK-led defence alliance made up of 10 northern and eastern European countries. The move strengthens Kyiv’s military ties with some of Europe’s most committed supporters as the war with Russia continues.

UK Defence Minister John Healey said the agreement sends a powerful message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that Europe’s staunchest allies will stand with Ukraine “for as long as it takes.” The agreement was signed in the Norwegian Arctic city of Bodø during a meeting of defence ministers from JEF nations and Ukraine’s representative, Denys Shmyhal.

Shmyhal said Ukraine would contribute expertise in countering hybrid threats, drone operations, air defence and infrastructure protection, adding that cooperation on long-range strike capabilities will be strengthened.

Norway’s Defence Minister described the enhanced partnership as a step that will improve response speed and deepen coordination, adding that it also helps prepare Ukraine for eventual NATO membership.

The JEF, established in 2014 following Russia’s annexation of Crimea, comprises Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden all current NATO members.
