The United Nations has commended Nigeria and Cameroon for their commitment to implementing the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling on their long-standing border dispute. The recognition came from Leonardo Simão, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, during the 5th Lake Chad Governors’ Forum held in Maiduguri on Wednesday.
Simão described the development as a significant step toward fostering regional peace and cooperation. He praised both nations for prioritizing a peaceful resolution, which has contributed to stability in the Lake Chad region.
“I commend both countries for their commitment to a peaceful resolution, which has been pivotal in fostering stability in the Lake Chad region,” he stated.
He further emphasized that the peaceful implementation of the ICJ’s ruling had positively impacted regional stability, enabling efforts to support affected communities, promote sustainable development, and enhance social cohesion. Simão acknowledged the role of Lake Chad Basin member states and governors in promoting cross-border collaboration, which has been instrumental in achieving lasting peace and economic recovery.
“I acknowledge the efforts invested by the governors and member states over the years to foster inclusiveness and collaboration across borders in the quest for sustainable peace and development in the Lake Chad area,” he noted.
While recognizing progress in the fight against terrorism in the region, Simão highlighted emerging challenges that require continued focus and cooperation. He urged the Lake Chad Basin countries to fully take ownership of the Adjusted Strategy for Stabilisation, Recovery, and Resilience, which serves as a framework for future interventions.
“In this regard, I welcome the proposal to adjust the Territorial Action Plan as a key mechanism for advancing the regional strategy at national and local levels,” he added.
Simão assured that the UN, through its Resident Coordinators and country teams, would remain a key partner in ensuring a coordinated and sustainable approach to stabilization.
Similarly, Anunna Eziakonwa, the UN Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP Assistant Administrator, and Regional Director for Africa, echoed the need for stronger regional cooperation. She expressed optimism that the Lake Chad region could overcome its challenges through inclusive governance, enhanced climate resilience, and strategic investments.
“We are gathered here at a time when this region has witnessed the fury of nature,” Eziakonwa remarked, extending condolences to the people of Borno in Nigeria and Marwa in Cameroon, who were recently affected by severe flooding.
She further called for a paradigm shift in the approach to stabilization efforts, emphasizing the importance of inclusion, accountability, and sustainable solutions.
“Governance must be strengthened, youth and women must be empowered, and climate adaptation must be accelerated. By investing in people and communities, we lay the foundation for lasting peace and stability,” Eziakonwa concluded.
The forum underscored the need for regional leaders to embrace collaborative solutions in addressing security, economic, and environmental challenges while ensuring the long-term stability and prosperity of the Lake Chad Basin region.
