–Tottenham Hotspur claimed a landmark victory on Wednesday night, edging past Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League final held at the iconic Estadio San Mamés, home of Athletic Bilbao. The triumph marks Spurs’ first major trophy since 2008 and their first European title in over four decades.
The tightly contested match saw Brennan Johnson emerge as the hero for the North London club, capitalising on a defensive lapse by Manchester United’s Luke Shaw to net the decisive goal in the 42nd minute. Despite the narrow scoreline, Tottenham’s resilience and defensive discipline defined the game, especially in the face of relentless pressure from United.
Manchester United dominated possession, holding the ball 74% of the time and registering 16 shots, six of them on target. In stark contrast, Tottenham managed just three attempts on goal, with Johnson’s strike the only effort to trouble the goalkeeper. Yet, it was the efficiency and organisation of Spurs’ backline, led by goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, that made the difference.
The Red Devils came close to leveling the match in the second half, but their hopes were dashed when Dutch defender Micky van de Ven executed a stunning acrobatic goal-line clearance to preserve Tottenham’s lead.
The result not only ends Tottenham’s 16-year wait for silverware—last lifting the League Cup in 2008—but also ensures their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, despite a lacklustre domestic campaign that saw them finish in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
For Manchester United, the defeat caps off a disappointing season. It means the club will miss out on European competition entirely next term and brings a premature end to their unbeaten run in Europe.
In a poignant moment for the club, Spurs captain Heung-Min Son lifted his first major trophy, just days after his close friend and former teammate Harry Kane celebrated his own title win with Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga.
The victory offers a glimmer of hope and pride for Tottenham fans, while Manchester United are left to reckon with yet another season of unfulfilled promise.
